Captain sidelined during accident investigation

Wed Nov 29 12:41:52 CET 2017 Timsen

Alcohol was not a factor in the "Zelinsky" accident that prompted the rescue of 114 people in lower Manhattan. The captain, Michael Sabatino, has been sidelined while investigators examined why the NYC Ferry became stuck on a sandbar about 100 feet from Manhattan’s Pier 11, off of Wall St., around 5:15 p.m. on Nov 27. Coast Guard investigators were looking into whether the crew — including Sabatino — followed proper protocols. Investigators will also determine if the ferry’s maps and nautical charts were up to date. The "Zelinsky" was docked at Pier 15 on Nov 28. Coast Guard divers were sent into the East River to inspect the ferry and found two small breaches in the hull — but six gas-powered pumps kept the vessel from flooding. Ferry with 123 persons aboard stuck on Hudson River

Tue Nov 28 09:51:20 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Zelinsky" became stuck on a sandbar after striking a submerged object 100 feet off Pier 11 on Nov 27, 2017, in Lower Manhattan soon after she left Pier 11, at 5.15 p.m. with 114 passengers and a crew of seven on board. The accident happened near the South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan enroute to the Rockaways Area of Queens. The propellers were damaged and two holes were poked into the hull, so that the ferry started taking on water. The crew tried to get the ship off again a few times before calling the FDNY at 6 p.m. Marine units from the NYPD, FDNY and Coastguard responded, and the passengers were transferred onto another boat within an hour. The "Zelinsky" was refloated with the help of a tug after the water ingress was brought under control with crews working throughout the night to get the ferry dislodged.
