Smit Amandla pulls capsized charter boat to port after big sea rescue operation

Mon Oct 15 23:05:19 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "Smit Amandla" towed the werck of the charter vessel "Miroshga" into the port of Cape Town after it capsized off Hout Bay on Oct 13, 2012. Three women had been trapped inside the wreck in the tiny space for around four hours until rescue divers could reach them. The 10m-long Hangberg Charter catamaran capsized near Duiker Island soon after 2 p.m. with 39 people on board, 35 passengers and four crew. Two men drowned and 37 people were rescued in one of the biggest sea rescue operations ever seen on the Peninsula. The two dead were a crew member and tour guide of Hout Bay, whose body was recovered by SA Navy divers on Oct 14 morning, and a holidaymaker from the UK, whose body was recovered at the scene of the accident on Oct 13. The NSRI triaged people and dispatched 24 to closest hospitals. It was mostly hypothermia. A wave had apparently broken over the stern. First the port engine stalled and then the starboard. The skipper ordered life jackets to be handed out and the liferaft was inflated. No success for Smit Amandla

Wed May 16 10:30:47 CEST 2012 Timsen

The cable from the "Smit Amandla" to the "Eihatsu Maru" aground on Clifton’s First beach parted about half an hour before high tide on May 15, 2012. The long liner remained solidly aground on Clifton’s 1st beach and will now have to be lightered before another salvage attempt starts.
