Elisabeth Russ replacing damaged ferry

Mon Mar 02 20:57:38 CET 2020 Timsen

While the fire damage in the engine room of the 'Volcan de Teneguía' remained to be assessed, the Technical Directorate of Arms-Trasmediterranean has made a decision regarding the connection between Cádiz and the Canary Islands. Transméditerranea published a note indicating that the 'Elisabeth Russ' has entered service on Feb 25 at 6 p.m. from Cadiz. The 'Elisabeth Russ' will start on Thursday from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and arrive at the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at 8:00 p.m. she will be operating . On Fridays at 8:00 p.m. he will be back in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and will load for Cádiz, leaving at dawn in order to arrive in Cádiz on Mondays in the morning. The damaged ferry remained moored at the port of Tenerife where it had returned on Feb 22 at 9.50 p.m. with tug assistance.

Fire off Cádiz

Sun Feb 23 16:51:07 CET 2020 Timsen

On Feb 22, 2020, at 8.20 p.m. a fire broke out aboard the 'Volcán de Teneguía', while she was heading towards the port of Cádiz after sailing from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the afternoon. The fire was detected when the ferry was off the coast of Antequera, giving the alarm. An IMO 2.1 tank unit had caught fire. The SAR ship 'Punta Salinas' headed towards the ship to assist. At 9 p.m. the fire could be put out by the crew. Subsequently the affected area was cooled down. On board were 18 crew members and one passenger. The option of towing the ship to Chicharrero was assessed. The 'Salvamar Tenerife' and the tugs 'VB Canarias', 'VB Tenerife' and 'VB Muletón' were deployed to the ship. There were no injuries among the crew, which had resolved the situation by complying with the security protocols. Due to the adverse weather conditions prevailing with strong winds the ship was taken in tow and has been docked at the south pier of the port of Tenerife on Feb 23 at 1 a.m.
