Northern Europe’s first floating rubbish bin installed in Helsinki

Wed May 10 10:08:34 CEST 2017 arnekiel

The technology group Wärtsilä’s project to bring floating rubbish bins to Finland is making progress. The project is being executed in honour of Finland’s centenary. The first Seabin marine rubbish bin in all of Northern Europe was launched and placed in test use today in Uunisaari, off the coast of the Kaivopuisto district of Helsinki. Another floating rubbish bin will be installed in Helsinki at the turn of June. Wärtsilä will be operating as the Seabin Project’s global pilot partner for the next three years. The other six pilot partners are La Grande Motte in Southern France, Porto Montenegro in Montenegro, Port Adriano in Mallorca (Spain), Butterfield in Bermuda, and Safe Harbor Marinas in the United States. Seabin Project launched its new V5 Hybrid model at the end of April. It then began installing prototypes at its pilot partners’ sites. For a three-month trial period, the pilot partners will provide information about how the floating rubbish bins have functioned. Seabins are expected to go on commercial sale in August. http://www.hellenicshippingnews.com/project-run-by-wartsila-and-seabin-project-makes-progress-northern-europes-first-floating-rubbish-bin-installed-in-helsinki/

Port of Helsinki opens new passenger ferry terminal

Tue Mar 21 09:27:31 CET 2017 arnekiel

Finland’s Port of Helsinki has officially opened its new passenger ferry terminal, West Terminal 2, which features an automated mooring system from Cavotec. West Terminal 2 is the largest single investment project undertaken by the port in a decade and included the construction of new berths, a terminal building, passenger bridges and access roads. Cavotec has also installed its MoorMaster units, vacuum-based automated mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines. The remote-controlled vacuum pads on the quayside will moor and release Tallink Grupp’s new 212-metre Tallink Megastar and Tallink Star passenger ferries in seconds. This is much quicker than conventional mooring systems. The systems will also reduce noise and emissions. http://www.cruiseandferry.net/articles/port-of-helsinki-opens-new-passenger-ferry-terminal#.WNDkQfnNy9I
