Pilot collapsed in the wheelhouse

Sun Dec 21 17:32:01 CET 2014 Timsen

The KNRM Breskens and a Belgian Sea King helicopter were alerted in the morning of Dec 21, 2014, due to a medical evacuation on the Wester Scheldt off Wielingen. The pilot of the "Bmoar Juno" had collapsed and become unconscious. The "Zeemanshoop" was the first to reach the tanker and transferred two crewmembers with AED and oxygen aboard to provide first aid as quickly as possible. After the lifeboat also the pilot boat went alongside to bring a new pilot on board. When the KNRM crew arrived in the wheelhouse, the man had regained consciousness. The medical condition of the man appeared to be stable, so it was decided to wait for the medical on board the Sea King, which was on site within 10 minutes. After the medical examined the patient, it was decided to evacuate him with the helicopter. Under the guidance of the physician and the KNRM crewmembers, the man was brought to the bow of the tanker. The helicopter hoisted his staff and the patient on board and headed with great urgency toward the hospital of Bruges. The lifeboat "Zeemanshoop" took off the equipment and the crew and returned to the station.
