HAL sold four cruise ships
Holland America Line announced that the 'Amsterdam', 'Maasdam', 'Rotterdam' and 'Veendam' have been sold and will be transferring to undisclosed buyers. The ships have been sold in pairs, with the 'Maasdam' and 'Veendam' transferring to one company in August 2020, while the 'Amsterdam' and 'Rotterdam' will move to another company in fall 2020. One pair will be going to a new cruise brand. On July 15, 2020, the wholly owned subsidiaries of Bonheur ASA have entered into agreements with HAL Nederland NV (part of the Carnival Corporation Group) for the acquisition of the 'Rotterdam' and 'Amsterdam' to be operated by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Ltd., UK, which is also a wholly owned subsidiary of Bonheur. The vessels will be renamed 'Bolette' and 'Borealis'.
29 passengers still waiting to disembark
The 'Rotterdam' which had carried 800 passengers from the 'Zaandam' through the Panama Canal and on to Port Everglades, remained anchored on Bahama Anchorage off Fort Lauderdale with 29 passengers on board as of April 13. The Holland America Line, which is owned by Carnival Corp., was working to arrange charter flights home for the remaining passengers.
Odyssey of cruise ship ended
The odysseey of the "Zaandam" and "Rotterdam" has ended when both vessels berthed in Fort Lauderdale on April 2 at 10.30 and 11.20 p.m. Most of the passengers were to be taken home by aircraft, some had to be treated medically on the spot or remained quarantined on board. Both ships had on board altogether 2.500 people, among them 311 US-citizens, 52 from Florida. Most of the 79 German passengers who showed no symptoms were transferred onto the "Rotterdam". Since March 22 on the whole 230 people had showed flu like symptoms. 45 passengers were unable to be transported and could remain isolated on board until their recovery. Less than 10 needed urgent medical care ashore. 1200 passengers without symptoms could start their flights home under the necessary safety measures. The crew remained on board. Governeor DeSantis who had resisted the disembarkation, advised the National Guard to assist in the evacuation.
