Traffic blocked after cargo ship hits canal on St Lawrence Seaway

Tue Oct 20 08:19:19 CEST 2015 arnekiel

Traffic was blocked on Monday morning on the South Shore Canal of the St Lawrence Seaway after a freighter hit the canal wall and became stuck with its bow run aground, according to CBC. The incident happened in Quebec province near Kahnawake – a reserve of the Iroquois Mohawk nation which sits across the St Lawrence from Montreal – when the Norwegian-owned Jo Spirit (6,285 dwt, built 1998), went off course and hit the wall around 3.30am. The ship was carrying a cargo of alcoholic spirits and was destined for Cuxhaven in Germany. Two tugboats were on the scene early on Monday afternoon to help release the vessel. Early reports from inspectors said the Jo Spirit appeared to be intact with no evidence of fuel leakage or pollution. And no crew members were injured. The ship’s owners, Jo Tankers, said the vessel suffered an engine failure prior to going off course. Officers of Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) will investigate the incident. http://splash247.com/traffic-blocked-after-cargo-ship-hits-canal-on-st-lawrence-seaway/

Grounding near Montreal

Mon Oct 19 21:19:25 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Jo Spirit" ran aground following an engine failure on Oct 19, 2015, at 3.30 a.m. near Montreal, enroute from Hamilton to Cuxhaven. The Saint-Lawrence Seaway traffic has been stopped while inspectors and crews prepared for the removal operations. The tugs "Ocean Georgie Bain" and "Ocean Intrepide" were dispatched to refloat the tanker which camoe off with own power around 5 p.m. Reports and photos: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/ship-kahnawake-stuck-1.3277624 http://www.cjad.com/cjad-news/2015/10/19/ship-full-of-spirits-stuck-in-seaway http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2344309 http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2344306 http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2344307 http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2344308
