First British owned ship built at Govan scrapped
When she was launched 31 years ago, she was four months ahead of schedule and was the first British owned ship built at Govan for years. The Govan yard had been saved and turned around by Eric Mackie and a new dawn was breaking for commercial shipbuilding on the Clyde. SIR JOHN FISHER, built for the famous firm of Fisher and Sons, Barrow, was a shining symbol of justifiable hope on the slipways of Govan and over the course of the eighties and nineties Govan produced some astonishing ships that reversed the percieved decline of commercial building on Clydeside. The HENG TONG 5, ex SIR JOHN FISHER, may now be a footnote in maritime and UK shipbuilding history as she meets her fate at the hands of breakers, but without that dawn she was very much part of, there may not have been a Govan shipyard today.
