Bulk carrier agriund off Norfolk

Thu Oct 01 19:24:47 CEST 2020 Timsen

The Coast Guard Sector Virginia and the Port of Virginia’s Maritime Incident Response Team were assisting the crew of the 'Hong Dai' and its crew of 22 after it ran aground near Norfolk, while enroute from Baltimore to Norfolk, in pos. 36° 58.13' N 076° 19.92' W on Oct, 2020, at 1.30 a.m. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Virginia command center received notification from the bulk coal carrier Hong Dai, stating the ship ran aground, loaded with a partial cargo of coal enroute to pick up more, on a soft sandy bottom approximately one quarter mile Northwest of Sewell’s Point in Norfolk. The crew reported no injuries, pollution or flooding concerns at the time. Sector Virginia investigation crews have boarded the ship and are assisting in assessing damages and the threat of pollution. The vessel remained under a Captain of the Port order to remain in place and the Coast Guard is currently in communication with the ship’s owners to assist in establishing a salvage plan. In the afternoon the tug 'Maxwell Paul Moran' (MMSI: 9812559) was near the grounded vessel. In the run of Oct 2 the ship was freed with the high tide by on the whole seven tugs and moored in pos. 36° 59.58' N 076° 19.11' W in a designated anchorage spot west of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. A dive team was to go out and inspect for any damage to the ship’s hull before it heads to its next destination.
