Xiamen offers help to Kinmen for oil leak cleanup

Wed Sep 21 11:10:05 CEST 2016 Timsen

Five days afterthe grounding of the "Gang Tai Tai Zhou", authorities in Xiamen agreed to offer assistance with cleanup work on Sep 20. Kinmen Magistrate Chen Fu-hai (陳福海) contacted officials in the Chinese province of Fujian and confirmed that Xiamen's Marine Safety Administration will send vessels to help deal with the ship. According to Taiwan's Maritime and Port Bureau oil leaks were reported on the night of Sep 16 and the county government and Coast Guard Administration (CGA) took emergency measures to stop the oil from spreading. The county government expected to finish the cleanup by Sep. 25. The vessel was carrying 25 tons of diesel and two tons of lubricant. the ship owner was ordered to present a plan for salvaging the vessel, with the help of the Chinese authorities, in a meeting scheduled for Sep 21. However, Hong Sheng Gang Tai Shipping closed operations after the whole management of the company went missing in 2015 leaving behind huge unpaid debts. Because of the strong current and waves, divers have not been able to determine the extent of damage to the ship's hull, and repair work can be only conducted at low tide. An emergency center was set up to handle the aftermath, and the CGA is conducting hourly patrols along the beach to check if the oil spill has spread to other parts of Kinmen. Workers have also been cleaning oil from the rocks along the beach, a task that was expected to be completed in two days. Bureau to finish oil spill cleanup within one week

Wed Sep 21 10:21:39 CEST 2016 arnekiel

The Maritime and Port Bureau yesterday said it hopes to finish pumping the fuel out of the stranded Gang Tai Taizhou container ship in Kinmen within one week to prevent further water pollution, adding that it would urge the Chinese government to remove the damaged ship as soon as possible. The Chinese cargo ship, which was supposed to be anchored in Xiamen Port in China’s Fujian Province, drifted toward Kinmen when Typhoon Meranti hit the outlying island during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday last week. It ran aground off Kinmen Island and sustained severe hull damage. Authorities had tried in vain to contain the spill from washing ashore, causing pollution on the beach and in the sea. http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2016/09/21/2003655569

Four tons oily waters removed

Tue Sep 20 21:42:01 CEST 2016 Timsen

After the "Gang Tai Tai Zhou" stranded on the beach of the Kinmen Island, an oil boom is being used to contain the ship’s oil spill. The ship drifted from the Xiamen Harbour for about 10 km to Kinmen on September 15 when the typhoon Meranti hit the Xiamen coast. Its oil spill has polluted the sea and the beach. On Sep 19, about 100 environmental protection workers removed four tons of oily water and greasy waste which had been discharged from the damaged bottom of the ship from the sea and beach.
