Bulker refloated

The Coast Guard oversaw the successful refloating of the "Ornak" on Apr 18. At approximately 9:35 a.m., the bulker was refloated offshore of the Virginia Beach Resort and Convention Center and repositioned to the Lynnhaven anchorage. Agencies involved in the removal of the grounded ship were Svitzer, the contracted salvage company, McAllister towing, the Virginia Pilots and the Coast Guard. The vessel was now undergoing inspections to verify that the ship posed no hazard to the port or the environment prior to being returned to commercial service. After the ballast water was pumped off, two McAllister tugs, the 5,150 horsepower "AJ McAllister" and the 4,650 horsepower "Emily Anne McAllister", attached tow lines to the vessel and slowly began towing the ship toward deeper water. The vessel was freed on an incoming tide at approx. 9:35 a.m. and anchored further from shore where an underwater hull survey was conducted. Salvage off Virginia Beach due to start

The Coast Guard on Apr 17 was reviewing plans for the salvage of the "Ornak" which was scheduled to begin Apr 18 morning near First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach. Ballast water was to be pumped off the vessel in the morning and tug boats would attempt to remove the vessel at high tide, which was expected at approximately 10:45 a.m. Once the vessel was freed, it was to be moved to Lynnhaven Anchorage for a hull inspection to be completed by a dive team. Once the ship was deemed safe, the Coast Guard would remove the captain of the port restrictions and allow the vessel to be put back into service. Bulkcarrier grounded off Lynnhaven

Winds gusting to 70 mph at Cape Henry caused 12 ships anchored in the vicinity of Lynnhaven to drag anchor and caused the "Ornak", that was anchored in the Lynnhaven Anchorage east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, waiting to pick up a load of wheat, to run aground on Apr 15, 2014, at approximately 8:35 p.m. near the First Landing State Park. The 22-member Polish crew was unable to turn the vessel around once engines were turned back on. They dropped a second anchor as they sailed a few hundred yards toward shore. Despite the hundreds of feet of chain dropped, the ship didn't stop until it hit a silty bottom in 15,5 feet of water. The Coast Guard hoped to use tugs to pull out the ship in the morning at high tide, but continued winds hampered that effort. Now, a plan for removal will have to be submitted to the Coast Guard for approval. The National Weather Service reported that waves reached 4 to 6 feet during the peak of the storm, with sustained winds from 30 mph to 45 mph. The winds, currently blowing from the north, weren't supposed to shift until Apr 19, which could make things more difficult. The ship appeared stable on Apr 16 morning, sitting parallel to shore just feet away from the beachfront Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center. Coast Guard officials rented Room 821 at the hotel, overlooking the ship To help stabilize the other drifting ships, the Virginia Pilot Office dispatched 11 pilots to embark the anchored vessels at anchorage. Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center watchstanders were working with local partners, the Virginia and Maryland Pilot's Associations and local tug boat companies to coordinate assistance to ships dragging anchor and others requiring tug support to remain moored at several facilities due to strong wind gusts.
