Bulkcarrier with engine damage in Algeciras

Mon Apr 06 19:24:02 CEST 2020 Timsen

On March 22, 2020, at 6.30 p.m. while the 'Rix Plato' was proceeding to the port entrance of Tangiers Med to take the pilot, the main engine started to work with abnormal exhaust gas and development of black smoke along with a high temperature. The problem appeared to originate from the ME cylinder No 8. A local surveyor was instructed and attended on board. Prior to the surveyor's attendance, the engine crew already started to overhaul themain engine unit no. 8. The chief engineer stated that after his investigation and unit overhauling, he noted an excessive amount of lube oil in main engine cylinder no. 8. Once the cylinder head was removed, he noted that pthe iston head was heavily damaged. Repairs have been carried out by the crew, and the vessel proceeded to Algeciras on March 27. Shortly before the departure from Tangiers, there was another problem with the main engine, but the vessel proceeded to the port with own power to Algeciras, where the vessel berthed at the Cernaval Group Shipyard on MArch 30. where the main engine was opened. A damage to the crank shaft on the main engine big end journal cylinder n. 8 has been noted. The measurements from theshipyard showed that it was out of a repairable size. The owners were now trying to get other independent measurements. The vessel left the port again on April 7 at 6.40 p.m. It berthed at the Bolderaya Shipyard in Riga on April 25 at 4.40 p.m. for further repairs.
