Brisani allided with bridge

Thu Apr 26 09:45:45 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "Brisani" allided with the Brielen Bridge in Tisselt on the Brussels-Scheldt Maritime Canal on Apr 25, 2012, at 5.50 p.m. The mast and roof of the wheelhouse were torn off and fell into the canal. The Willebroek fire department rushed to the scene. The unloaded ship came from Zemst and was enroute to Willebroek. It had been waiting to pass the bridge for quite some time, but then the skipper tried to pass underneath the bridge before this was rised. Due to what might have been a miscalculation, the mast of the ship and the roof of the wheelhouse slammed against the underside of the bridge. The windows were broken, and the wheelhouse collapsed completely. There were two crew members in the wheelhouse who miraculously were not injured. Divers from the fire brigades of Willeboek and Londerzeel located the debris and pulled it ashore at the Alural Westdijk at 7.15 p.m. Once the mast and roof of the wheelhouse were fished out of the water the canal was reopened for ship traffic. The "Brisani" was moored at the quay of the concrete plant at Ready Beton in Brielen. Representatives of Waterwegen and Zeekanaal inspected whether the bridge was damaged before re-opening it for traffic.
