Small oil spill in Bay of Plenty

Tue Aug 19 12:08:47 CEST 2014 Timsen

A small amount of oil spilled while the "Seastar Empress" was being refuelled in the Port of Tauranga on Aug 19, 2014, but only around one litre reached the water. The leak came from the vessel near the end of refuelling and was discovered at 11:30 a.m. Around 20 litres of heavy fuel was spilled, but most was collected in a 'keep-safe' area around the bunkering connection. "The failure occurred at the coupling connection to the Port of Tauranga fuel lines. The hose, coupling and the connection were being examined and not be reused until the cause was determined. The cause of the leak is unknown and was to be investigated by Mobil. The company immediately followed oil spill management procedures and contacted the Council's pollution hotline.
