Ferry repaired months after fire
Almost ten months after the fire aboard the"Tenacia," owned by Isabella Grimaldi's Grimaldi Investments, is back at the disposal of its charterer, GNV, and will return to service next summer. The ship has been repaired and modernized in the affected areas at the Nuova Meccanica Navale shipyard in Naples, in which MSC holds a shareholding. The fire broke out in the engine room on July 8, 2023, while the ferry was sailing north of Ibiza.
Disabled ferry towed to Valencia
The helicopter Helimer 207 transferred three MIRG firefighters from the Generalitat onto the Tenacia to assess the situation and determine the feasibility of towing the vessel to the port of Valencia. Six more firefighters were transferred on board on the morning of July 9. The fire, which had started in the engine room, caused smoke to reach deck 3. The firefighters worked through the night to extinguish it while the passengers were Musterdepot on the boat deck. The goal was to monitor the hot spots and ensure it was safe to tow the vessel to port. Salvamento Maritimo continued fire-fighting efforts as GNV has contracted the tug ' VB Xerea' to handle the vessel's tow to Valencia, where it arrived at 12.30 p.m. The fire originated in one of the two Wärtsilä 12V46 main engines, which propel the ship, with a power of 12,000 kW, although it will be necessary to wait for future inspections by the technicians when the engine room has been totally shrunk. In a quite tense atmosphere on board, the captain, in agreement with the shipping company, Capitanía Marítima de Palma and Salvamento Marítimo made the decision to evacuate the passenger on the high seas, using own means and with the support of Salvamento Marįtimo, taking advantage of the favourable situation of the prevailing good weather, to guarantee maximum safety for all passengers and crew, also due to the fact that the ship only had one emergency generator and the implication that this had on the essential services on board. It has also been said that an overheated trailer presented a potential fire risk. The affected passengers have been assisted by GNV, providing them with accommodation in Valencia and money for clothing and toiletries. It has not been reported, so far, when they will be able to access their luggage or the state of their vehicles.
Passengers are taken off disabled ferry
The passengers of the 'Tenacia', whose engine room caught fire in the early hours of July 8, halfway between Palma and Valencia and north of Ibiza, with the situation under control by Salvamento Maritimo, the arrival of another vessel from the same shipping company, the 'GNV Bridge', that covered the Palma-Valencia route, has allowed to proceed with the transfer of the passengers with the 'Salvamar Libertas', to, once completed, return them to their port of origin, in this case Valencia, where it is expected that the 'Tenacia' will also be towed by the tug 'Marta Mata' (IMO: 9429120). As detailed by Salvamento Marítimo, the fire has activated the security protocols of the Rescue coordination centers in Palma, Barcelona, Tarragona and Madrid and the Maritime Captaincy of Palma. Specifically, under the direction of the Maritime Captaincy, the 'Salvamar Acrux', 'Salvamar Libertas' and the SAR vessels 'Mesana' and 'Marta Mata' have been mobilized by sea, and by air the Helimer 221, Helimer 207 and Helimer 203 helicopters.
