Disabled ferry towed to Valencia

Tue Jul 09 21:02:59 CEST 2024 Timsen

The helicopter Helimer 207 transferred three MIRG firefighters from the Generalitat onto the Tenacia to assess the situation and determine the feasibility of towing the vessel to the port of Valencia. Six more firefighters were transferred on board on the morning of July 9. The fire, which had started in the engine room, caused smoke to reach deck 3. The firefighters worked through the night to extinguish it while the passengers were Musterdepot on the boat deck. The goal was to monitor the hot spots and ensure it was safe to tow the vessel to port. Salvamento Maritimo continued fire-fighting efforts as GNV has contracted the tug ' VB Xerea' to handle the vessel's tow to Valencia, where it arrived at 12.30 p.m. The fire originated in one of the two Wärtsilä 12V46 main engines, which propel the ship, with a power of 12,000 kW, although it will be necessary to wait for future inspections by the technicians when the engine room has been totally shrunk. In a quite tense atmosphere on board, the captain, in agreement with the shipping company, Capitanía Marítima de Palma and Salvamento Marítimo made the decision to evacuate the passenger on the high seas, using own means and with the support of Salvamento Marįtimo, taking advantage of the favourable situation of the prevailing good weather, to guarantee maximum safety for all passengers and crew, also due to the fact that the ship only had one emergency generator and the implication that this had on the essential services on board. It has also been said that an overheated trailer presented a potential fire risk. The affected passengers have been assisted by GNV, providing them with accommodation in Valencia and money for clothing and toiletries. It has not been reported, so far, when they will be able to access their luggage or the state of their vehicles.
