Emergency tug could not keep trawler from sinking

Sat Sep 12 21:16:01 CEST 2015 Timsen

The „Abeille Liberté“ responded to a fire aboard the fishing vessel "Le Regarde Ailleurs - CN.626604“, 23 gt (MMSI-No.: 228116700) from Port-en-Bessin (Calvados) in the evening of Sep 10, 2015, off the Pointe du Hoc. The fire broke out in the early afternoon. At 1.45 p.m. the CROSS Jobourg was alerted by the crew of two of the fire six nautical miles northeast of Port-en-Bessin. The distress call was relayed to ships in the area, including the research vessel „André Malraux“ of the Ministry of Culture amd an EC 225 helicopter of the Navy base in Maupertus and the SNSM boat „Ouistreham“. A semi-rigid craft of the fire brigade (SDIS 14), which was conducting a dive training in the area, also attended. The two fishermen could not control the fire and boarded a liferaft. They were recovered unharmed by the boat of the fire brigade and picked up at the dock, while the SNSM boat was trying to contain the fire with his water cannon. Meanwhile, the fishing vessel "Milou" also baffled by the CROSS, recovered the life raft to prevent it to go adrift. Subsequently, in connection with the maritime prefecture, the CROSS called the „Abeille Liberté“, which sailed from Cherbourg, and the patrol boat „Pluvier“ which was operating in the Seine Bay. All ships were following the trawler trying to control the fire but above all to avoid ist grounding at the coastline. By late afternoon a team of the fire brigade Cherbourg was deployed there with a thermal camera. A response team was able to get on board to recover a gas cylinder that was there. However, the fire took spread further and forced the team to quickly evacuate the trawler. The SNSM boat and the „Abeille Liberté“ could reduce the blazein the evening, leaving the possibility to try a tow before the trawler was grounding on the coast. The trawler could actually be towed for a few minutes before capsizing, weakened by fire and heavy with the water used for the fire extinction. The ship sank off the Pointe du Ho at 11 p.m. In the morning of Sep 11 the „Pluvier“ was underway to recover any debris at the surface. The fuel on board evaporated quickly. No luck for the Lucky

Thu Jan 08 09:43:24 CET 2015 Timsen

Despite the intervention of the "Abeille Liberté" the French f/v "Lucky - LH 482700", 10 gt, could not be saved on Jan 6, 2015. The vessel had caught fire 10 miles north of Ouistreham, and the crew of three boarded a raft. They were recovered by the f/v "Bambino" and then transferred onto the "Esteron" of the French Coast Guard which had been nearby enroute to Le Havre. One of them had suffered slight burns and was medically treated after the arrival in port at 2.30 p.m. The CROSS Jobourg dispatched the lifeboat "Sainte Anne - SNM 091" of the SNSM-station Ouistreham, the patrol boat "Cormoran" andthe police boat "Géranium" as well as an EC 225-helicopter of the naval base Cherbourg with fire fighters on board to the "Lucky". Also the "Abeille Liberté" sailed from Le Havre, supported by the "La Philippoise - SNS230" of the SNSM-station Gravelines, the "Notre-Dame du Risban - SNS 077" of the SNSM-station in Calais, the police boats "Escaut" and "Eulimene" as well as the "Nordet - DF 37". At 3.15 p.m. the rescue forces were on site, but the wheelhouse and foredeck had already been totally burnt, and it was estimated too dangerous to board the still burning wreck. At 5.30 p.m. the ship sank, and the "Abeille Liberté" recovered some debris from the water. Salvage tug recovered container

Fri Feb 14 09:49:19 CET 2014 Timsen

In the mid-morning of Feb 13, 2014, the Maritime Operations Centre Cherbourg dispatched the "Abeille Liberté" to recover a container that posed a danger to navigation in southern area of the traffic separation zone of the Caskets, Northwest-Cotentin. Earlier an EC 225 helicopter of the French Navy had relocated and marked it. The presence of the white container had first been reported on Feb 11 by a merchant ship, and an urgent notice to mariners was issued by the maritime authorities In the morning of Feb 12, the EC 225 made its first flight with the goal to mark the container but was unable to relocate it due to severe weather conditions. Later in the evening, another merchant ship was again reported the presence of the container. In the morning of Feb 13, the Maritime Operations Centre Cherbourg again sent the helicopter. The crew was able to relocate the container and mark it by launching a plunger and attach the tag and buoy to the box in order to track the position of the container in real time. The "Abeille Liberté" took the container in tow in the early afternoon and arrived at Cherbourg in the evening. The Maritime Prefecture contacted the owner of the ship which lost the container for further handling.
