Three men jumped over board in Öre Sound
In the morning of July 31, 2014, three crew members of the "Abou Karim III" jumped over board in the Oere Sound. All three reached the shore, two on the Danish side, one in Helsingborg. For one of them a search operation was launched after he jumped into the sea at 5:30 a.m. near Snekkersten south of Elsinore with two helicopters, a patrol boat of the Danish Coast Guard Lifeboat in Råå and the lifeboat from Barsebäck. While the cattle carrier was off Dragør, two more men of Syrian nationality jumped from the deck at 6:30 a.m. They were found quickly and interrogated during the day by the Danish police which suspected there must have been some kind of trouble aboard. The police expected that the two Syrians would request asylum in Denmark. At noon the search for the third person was terminated after information was received that a man had reached the port of Helsingborg wearing a survival suit. His nationality was at present unknown, the police was searching for him. The ship which was transporting cattle was ordered to anchor south of Dragør. The crew consisted of 47 people. Two Syrians jumped over board
Two Syrian nationals jumped from the "Abou Karim III" on May 6 and early on May 7, 2014, near the Delaware Memorial Bridge, with one of them making it to land in Salem County before both were captured. The two were caught after a search conducted by Pennsville Police, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations unit in Cherry Hill. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police assisted. One of the ship's crew members, who has not been identified, was fished out of the Delaware River in the evening of May 6 by a tug. The second crew member, an 18-year-old Syrian, was caught around 6 a.m. on May 7 after he was spotted trying to break into a construction vehicle on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property near Kilchohook. The police identified him as Omar Khalef. Both were taken into custody of HSI for questioning. They face deportation. The converted cattle-carrier had departed Wilmington, Delaware, en route to Jordan.
