AIDA Cruises cancels Asia trips prematurely

Fri Feb 14 13:10:17 CET 2020 Timsen

Aida Cruises has pulled the emergency brake for two ships based in Asia in view of the spreading corona virus in the area. The passengers of the "Aidabella" and "Aidavita" wiil be flying back, ten cruises with the ships have been canceled. The last passengers of the "Aidabella" will be disembarked in Bangkok on Feb 17. For the Rostock shipping company, the health and well-being of guests and crew were top priorities at all times, it said. Since the airlines were also reducing their flights to Asia due to the illnesses, the company has taken the decision. Both ships have around 3000 passengers on board. They have to start their journey home starting on Feb 16 e from Thailand by aircraft. The "Aidavita" will disembark the passengers on that day in Laem Chabang/Bangkok, the "Aidabella" the following day. After disembarkation, the two cruise ships were supposed to move to Europe and Dubai as quickly as possible without passengers on board. From there, new trips are to be offered, which the Aida Cruises shipping company is currently working on at short notice. The "Aidavita" will probably be used for trips to the Middle East from mid-March, the "Aidabella" for trips to the Mediterranean. Due to the early departure from Asia and the relocation of the ships, a total of ten cruises was canceled. Because the "Aidabella" takes about two to three weeks from Thailand via Singapore and Suez to Palma de Mallorca, she will arrive in mid-March, six weeks earlier than planned. The "Aidavita" should take about ten days to two weeks after Dubai. Aida Cruises claims to reimburse the over 10,000 German passengers on the canceled trips and offer alternative vacation options from the Aida travel program. A new timetable for March and April is currently being prepared for the "Aidabella". So far, only one date is certain: on April 30, 2020 the ship is due to sail from Palma de Mallorca to Kiel. The "Aidavita" will set course for Hamburg in April. Both ships are based in Northern Europe in the summer season.

Cruise ship denied to berth in Cai Lan

Fri Feb 14 10:36:14 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Aidavita' was unable to call at the port city of Cai Lan in Halong Bay. The local tourism authority prohibited passengers and crew from going ashore. A reason for the procedure was initially not given. However, it was suspected that the ban was for fear of the spread of the corona virus. There were around 1,100 passengers and 400 crew members, mostly from Germany, on the ship which had come from the Philippines and had previously not entered a Chinese port. There were no suspected cases or confirmed corona virus diseases on board. No guest or crew member on board has been in China in the past 14 days. The ship's next stop should now be the Thai port of Laem Chabang near Bangkok. The ship then was bound for Koh Samui via Port Kelang and Malacca to Singapore with an ETA as of Feb 23, 2020.

Change in itinerary due to coronavirus

Fri Jan 31 13:22:27 CET 2020 Timsen

Due to the coronavirus the 'Aidavaita' has a change in the itinerary of the cruise from Feb 2-23, 202. The call in Hongkong, planned from Feb 12-13, will be skipped. Instead the ship will call at Cai Lan (Vietnam) in the Halong Bight on Feb 13-14.
