Outdated charts - ship aground off Bremerhaven
In the night to Sep 15, 2014, the "Ran" ran aground on the Weser off Bremerhaven. The police boat "Bremen 30" was dispatched to the grounding site to assist. The cargo ship which had sailed from Brake short before midnight, managed to refloat with own power and dropped anchor while investigations were launched which showed that the electronic and paper charts were outdated. The 34 year old master stated that wind and current had pushed the ship aground during an anchoring manoever. The ship was detained by the relevant shipping authority until the defiencies have been removed and the ship was declared seaworthy again. In the run of Sep 15 a pilot should take the ship to port. Ship seized due to lots of serious defiencies
On Feb 21, 2014, the pilots of the "Ran" raised alarm about shortcomings of the vessel Ran which was underway with a cargo of scrap on the Gota River after having sailed from Rotterdam on Feb 18. The Transport Agency decided on detention of the ship due to the deficiencies which included errors in the steering mechanism. Two inspectors were sent immediately to the dock at Agnesberg where the "Ran" was berthed. When they went through the ship, they found a lot of cracks and design defects and on the whole the vessel to be in very poor condition. The vessel will only be released once the deficiencies have been remedied, which, regarding the amount of defiencies, may take quite some time. On Nov 23, 2013, the "Ran" had run aground at Ålöbodarna off Landskrona . The skipper was arrested due to suspicion of drinking at the helm after having passed a breathalyzer test of the Coast Guard. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment by the District Court of Malmö.
