Fire on cargo vessel in Corpus Christi

Wed Jun 11 09:43:29 CEST 2014 Timsen

On June 10, 2014, around 2.45 p.m. a fire broke out in one of cargo holds of the "Antonio", berthed in Corpus Christi just under the Harbor Bridge, while the ship’s crew was unloading wind turbine blades. Some wooden cargo supports inside the ship had been set alight by welding sparks. A thick column of black smoke could be seen everywhere in the area. Fire crews battled the blaze with high-pressured water. The fire was contained at 4 p.m. Fire crews continued to squelch hot spots into the evening. Dock operations at Oil Dock 15 were temporarily halted but resumed at 4:12 p.m. Traffic leading into the Dave Throop Maintenance Facility, where the Antonio was docked, was closed for several hours. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. Two Corpus Christi firefighters were taken to hospitals. One of them in the rank of a captain was flown to a hospital in San Antonio for treatment after he inhaled hot gas from the blaze. The other firefighter was under observation for exhaustion at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial.
