Ports ban quarantine ferry from berthing
After Trapani, Augusta also refused permittance for the 'Aurelia' to dock with 273 migrants on board, of whom at least twenty were coronavirus positive. After the no to the berthing decreed by the mayor of Trapani, Giacomo Tranchida, a similar denial was ordered by the mayor of Augusta, Cettina Di Pietro. The 'Aurelia', in fact, initially destined for the Trapani port, was then sent to the port of Augusta, but he ordered the absolute ban on berthing. The ferry will therefore remain outside the Sicilian ports, at least until a new decision is made.
Second quarantine ship in Lampedusa
On Aug 19, 2020, the 'Aurelia', chosen as the second quarantine ship belonging to the SNAV group, arrived in the port of Lampedusa following the decision of the Ministry of the Interior to increase resources to support the emergency off the Sicilian coast. The ferry, however, had some difficulties in docking due to the strong wind that caused a series of scarce maneuvers so that it was not able to approach the pre-established pier. At 11.15 a.m. it was finally berthed.
Ferry adrift off Croatia
The "Aurelia" lost propulsion on May 9, 2019, around 3 a.m. en route from Alcona, where it had sailed at 8.30 p.m. the previous evening at 8.30 p.m,, to Split 40 miles off the Croatian coast with 250 passengers, among them 58 Croats, mostly Sibenik, some Splinic and over 200 Italians, who were headed to Medjugorje, 92 crew members as well as 51 cars, seven trucks and two buses on board. The ferry was disabled 20 miles west of Primoštena in rough seas, experiencing heavy roll and pitch. Attempts to evacuate passengers by shuttle boats were aborted because of weather. The tug "Pollux" (IMO-No.: 8121898) was sent from the Gaženi port in Zadar at 11.30 a.m. to take the ship in tow. The lifeboat "Pojisan" (MMSI-No.: 238116240) was sent from Split to assist in the morning. In the foremiddy of May 10 the convoy was off the Drvenik Veliki island where the passage was more quiet. The MRCC Rijeka was in charge of assisting the ferry. The people on board were safe, there was electricity, the services were active and the shops open, and the sea calmed down a bit. The freighter "Maira" (IMO: 9203502) which had diverted on its voyage from Koper and sheltered the ferry from the wind for hours, meanwhile continued its voyage to Piraeus. At 1 p.m. the ferry was safe in port.
