Engine room fire off Bell island

The 'Beaumont Hamel' suffered a fire in the engine room 0,50 miles east of Bell Island in position 47 37 48 N, 052 54 36W on Dec 13, 2020, at 08.05 a.m. The fire was put out using fire extinguishers, and the vessel continued its voyage between Long Pond and Bell Island.

Ferry blocked by disgruntled users

The "Beaumont Hamel" was being held up at Fogo Island by disgruntled ferry users on Nov 8, 2017, with no indication of when it might be released. The people were upset by the schedule being brought in for the service. It was not what had been expected. The "Legionnaire2 was going to run with one fewer trip a day, and the last ferry would leave Farewell at different times every day of the week. The provincial government was set to move the "Beaumont Hamel" to the Bell Island-Portugal Cove route, with the "Legionnaire" going to serve the Fogo run, but that is now on hold. The changes were all fallout from the loss of the "Veteran" to maintenance through to January. The fresh protest hit just as the government appeared to have calmed the waters after a similar protest over a planned interim schedule at Bell Island.

Half an hour ferry ride took eight hours

The "Beaumont Hamel" took about eight hours to get to Bell Island on Apr 1, 2017, as the ferry became stuck in heavy pack ice in Conception Bay. About 30 passengers boarded on the Bell Island side mid-afternoon, and they didn’t get off until about 11:00 p.m. The only food service on the ferry were two vending machines but the crew helped out and provided cookies, sandwiches, coffee and tea.
