Lucky rescue after five days adrift on sea

Mon Jul 13 10:14:56 CEST 2015 Timsen

Five fishermen were rescued by the “Shoudong Harmony” on July 11, 2015, after being after being stranded at sea in a 14-foot skiff since July 15, after an HC-130 Hercules air crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point spotted the aluminum skiff while searching, 184 miles east northeast of Teraina Island, Kiribati. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center received notification on July 8 at 4:37 p.m. from the Rescue Coordination Center in Nandi, near Fiji, reporting the overdue skiff after it had not returned after departing on a fishing trip from Teraina Island, Kiribati, on July 6. The men had no engines, little provisions and no lifesaving equipment. After searching for several days with negative results, the Hercules air crew located the men on July 10 at 4:15 p.m. and dropped food, water, two VHF radios, a Coast Guard issued Personal Location Beacon, a signal mirror and flares to the skiff. In conjunction with AMVER, watchstanders at the JRCC in Honolulu and the Kiribati Search and Rescue Liaison coordinated two vessels, the “Shourong Harmony” and the “Moamoa” to assist with the rescue of the men. On July 11 at 1:50 p.m., they were finally rescued by the “Shourong Harmony” which was scheduled to rendezvous with the “Moamoa” to transfer the men where they will be taken back to Kiribati. The distance from Honolulu to where the men were rescued was about 1,087 miles. Report with photos and video: http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doc/4007/2558954/

Bulk Carrier to The Rescue – Five Rescued from Skiff After Five Days Lost at Sea

Mon Jul 13 09:27:55 CEST 2015 arnekiel

Five men are lucky to be alive after spending five days adrift in the Pacific Ocean aboard their 14-foot aluminum skiff with little supplies. The men were rescued Sunday by the crew of the Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Shourong Harmony after a U.S. Coast Guard air crew spotted the boat 184 miles east northeast of Teraina Island, Kiribati, located in the Central Pacific more than 1,300 miles from Hawaii. The men were first reported missing to the Coast Guard last Wednesday afternoon after they didn’t returned from a fishing trip off Kiribati in a skiff with no engines, little provisions and no lifesaving equipment. The Coast Guard search and rescue turned up empty until Friday when a Coast Guard air crew from Barbers Point spotted the men and dropped food, water, two VHF radios, a Personal Location Beacon (PLB), a signal mirror and flares to the skiff.
