Mechanical failure off Laurium
The 'Caesar', with 26 crew members on board and loaded with 30,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, suffered a mechanical damage off Laurium about 1,15 nautical miles east of Cape Sounio in vicinity 37 38 43 N, 024 03 11 E on June 24, 2022. A Greek Coast Guard patrol boat which was in the area offered to provide assistance if required. The vessel was subsequently escorted to the Laurium anchorage for repairs and investigations. The Central Port Authority of Laurium prohibited the departure of the 'Caesar' until a class maintenance certificate was issued.
Tanker continues to be detained
The Yemeni Petroleum Company (YPC) on March 8, 2022, confirmed that the Saudi-Emirati coalition continued to detain the 'Caesar' and was delaying its release. The Saudi coalition, by its delay in releasing the ship, was ignoring all calls to neutralize the humanitarian file and alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people who were experiencing the largest humanitarian crisis in full view of the United Nations and the world. The YPC had previously received information that the Saudi-led coalition had agreed to release two ships, one of which was the “Caesar.” Until this moment, the ship had not moved from the detention area to the port of Hodeida, despite obtaining prior permits from the UN Verification and Inspection Committee.
