Patrol boat attended blazing ferry
The "" Captain Hugh Mulzac" attended after a fire broke out twice on the lower decks of the St. Vincent-Grenadines flagged ferry "Gem Star", 487 gt (IMO-No.: 8887870), on April 8, w2019, at the Grenadines Wharf in Kingstown, at 10 a.m. durnig welding works. Police officers were manning the entrances of the wharf, where throngs of people lined up alongside vehicles, waiting for police to grant permission to board other ships travelling to the Grenadines. Efforts to put out the fire were doubled when the tug "Captain Bim" arrived on scene and began spouting streams of water in to the lower decks of the ferry through open areas where puffs of smoke were escaping. The SVG Coastguard was also on scene with one of its RHIBs floating close to the vessel and the "Captain Hugh Mulzac" was on standby further out in the harbour. The puffs of smoke subsided around 11 a.m., but the fire reignited at 6 p.m. The SVG Fire Service was stationed outside the ship on the wharf, while thick clouds of smoke escaped through the open spaces.
