Report: Injuries of crew man were underestimated

Wed Apr 20 12:04:10 CEST 2022 Timsen

Pjero Kurida, a 29 yyear old crew member of the 'ER Athina' - now sailing as 'Cho Supporter' who died after being crushed on the vessel off Aberdeen in 2012, was left waiting for a fishing boat to take him to hospital after his injuries were under-estimated. His chest became trapped between a rescue craft and a ship while at sea but the incident was not treated as a medical emergency, a Fatal Accident Inquiry has found. The coastguard was not alerted to his condition by the captain of the ship, who contacted a fishing vessel to take him to hospital and did not ask for an ambulance. This resulted in a significant delay in Mr Kurida arriving at hospital. The Croatian was aboard a fast rescue craft (FRC) with a colleague as the pair attempted to paint the 'ER Athina' in the open sea after it suffered damage to its hull in Aberdeen harbour. The swell of the sea caused the vessel and the fast rescue craft to crash together trapping Mr. Kurida between the lifting frame of the FRC and the hull of the supply vessel. It was suspected he may have fractured ribs but remained conscious. Almost an hour later he was transferred to the 'Skua', a fishing boat, and taken to shore. At the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary his condition deteriorated quickly and he went into cardiac arrest. He died having arrived at hospital less than an hour before. Sheriff Wallace determined the cause of death as chest and abdominal crush injuries. A forensic pathologist found the accumulation of injuries sustained at the time of the accident were “not survivable”. The sheriff found a number of precautions that could have been taken that may have avoided the fatal accident. This included not carrying out the repairs while at open sea or using a painting platform if repairs were to go ahead. Those responsible for operating merchant vessels in UK waters should have training, guidance and procedures in place to ensure appropriate responses to medical incidents of “uncertain severity”. Fatal accident inquiry to be held into the death of a man in 2012

Wed Jan 27 21:24:28 CET 2021 Timsen

A fatal accident inquiry is to be held into the death of a man who was crushed on the 'E.R. Athina', now sailing as 'CBO Supporter', while sh was berthed off Aberdeenin June 2012. Pjero Kurida, 29, was working on the vessel when he became trapped between the hull and the fast rescue craft lifting frame. The severity of his injuries was not immediately recognised, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch said. A preliminary hearing will be held in Aberdeen in March 2021. The MAIB report in 2013 said Mr Kurida was heard to cry out in pain, and was seen trapped for several seconds until he collapsed. He was evacuated ashore for medical treatment by a fishing vessel which was used to support ships at anchor off Aberdeen. However, he died soon after arriving at hospital. The report said his transfer to hospital ashore, with what were severe internal chest injuries, would probably have been quicker if it had been arranged through the Coastguard rather than the ship's agent. The preliminary hearing will be held on March 3 at Aberdeen Sheriff Court ahead of a full FAI being set.

Crewman of "E.R. Athina" died in boat drill

Wed Jun 13 15:24:50 CEST 2012 Timsen

A seaman from Split has died near the port of Aberdeen on June 12, 2012, after a three meter high wave trapped him inbetween the "E.R. Athina" he was working on and the vessel's tender during a training exercise. The accident happened one mile off the port when the man, who was the crew member of the "E.R. Athina", was in the boat's tender during an exercise drill. The sea was calm, but all of a sudden a three meter wave threw the tender in which the man was in, against the approaching "E.R. Athina". The man, who was about to be promoted to an officer, sustained serious internal injuries as he was trapped between the two boats. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.
