Suspected human smuggling vessel interdicted
US Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations personnel interdicted a vessel suspected of human smuggling off the coast of Malibu in the morning of Nov 21, 2023. While on a routine patrol, the Coast Guard Cutter 'Blackfin' detected a 41-foot pleasure craft operating 16 miles off the Malibu coast at 4:16 p.m. Personnel at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach diverted the 'Halibut', launched a small boat from the Station Los Angeles - Long Beach, and requested surface and air assets from AMO and CBP's Office of Field Operations Special Enforcement Group to investigate. The law enforcement teams arrived on the scene and detained 23 undocumented non-citizens attempting to enter the country illegally. AMO took the vessel in tow and transported it with the people onboard to shore for further processing by SEG officers. AMO seized the suspected smuggling vessel.

Two Mexican nationals were charged Monday in the death of a U.S. Coast Guardsman, whose succumbed to a traumatic head injury after his boat was rammed off the Southern California coast. The suspects -- Jose Meija-Leyva and Manuel Beltran-Higuera -- are charged with killing a U.S. government officer while that officer was on duty in the death of Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne III, the U.S. attorney's office for the central district of California said in a news release. Neither man was asked to enter a plea when they appeared Monday afternoon in federal court, where Magistrate Judge Victor Kenton ordered them held without bond, U.S. attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek said. Small boat of Halibut rammed, one dead
Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne III, second in command on athe "Halibut", was killed early in the morning of Dec 2, 2012, as he and his crew investigated a suspected smuggling vessel near Santa Cruz Island in the Santa Barbara Channel. The panga — a small, open craft often used by Mexican smugglers to run drugs and migrants up the West Coast — was first spotted by a Coast Guard patrol plane at around 1 a.m. It it was operating without any navigational lights. The Coast Guard dispatched the "Halibut" which deployed its smaller intercept boat with the officer on board. The crew approached the panga with its blue law enforcement light flashing when the panga maneuvered at a high rate of speed directly towards the small boat and struck it before fleeing the scene. Two Coast Guard members, including Horne, were thrown into the ocean and immediately recovered by the small boat, but Horne had suffered a severe head injury. The other Coast Guard member sustained minor injuries. The "Halibut" collected all crew members on board, administered first aid to Horne, and rushed to Port Hueneme in Ventura County where emergency medical units were waiting. Horne was declared dead on arrival at 2:01 a.m. Additional Coast Guard assets were able to stop the fleeing panga, and detained two suspects. The incident remained under investigation. It’s unclear if any drugs were found in the panga.
