Merchant ship assisted distressed yacht crew
The bulk carrier 'Omiros L', en route from Itaqui to Algeciras, and the 'Chem Sirius', en route from Las Palmas to Recalada, stood by the sailing boat 'Forex Gomme' which was in distress in the night of Dec 27, 2022, about 100 miles south of Tenerife. The SAR helicopter Helimer 206 rescued the six crew members and transferred them to the Gando airport.
Medevac off Cherbourg
On May 3, 2021, the CROSS Jobourg was contacted by the 'Chem Sirius', enroute from La Romana to Antwerp, which requested medical assistance for a crew member. The CROSS Jobourg made contact with the MRCC in Falmouth and finally took over the coordination of the SAR operation which took place in the British SRR 110 nautical miles west of Cherbourg. The CROSS then initiated a conference call with the maritime medical consultation center in Toulouse and the maritime medical coordination service in Le Havre, which recommended the evacuation of the patient. The CROSS Jobourg deployed a Caiman helicopter of the French Navy base in Maupertus with a medical team from the medical center of the army health service in Querqueville on board. The medical team was hoisted aboard the chemical tanker where it performed first aid and conditioned the patient who was then hoisted aboard the helicopter. He was dropped off at the Quai des Flamands in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin where he was taken care of by the departmental fire and rescue service of La Manche to be transferred to the Pasteur de Cherbourg university hospital center.
The first ocean-going vessel in 2017 to cross into Port of Montreal waters
The Port of Montreal is pleased to welcome the first ocean-going vessel in 2017 to cross its downstream limits at Sorel, without a stopover,. The ship is the CHEM SIRIUS, flying the Liberia flag. The CHEM SIRIUS, under the command of Captain Danel Ju, is a chemical tanker operated by Ace Tankers CV and represented in Montreal by the SMK Tanker Agency. The CHEM SIRIUS left the Port of Antwerp in Belgium on December 19. On Wednesday, January 4, the Port of Montreal will award the 178th Gold-Headed Cane at the ceremony celebrating the arrival each year of the first ocean-going vessel to reach Montreal without a stopover. This ceremony will mark this great tradition in the marine community as well as the 375th anniversary of the City of Montreal and the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. Operated by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA), the Port of Montreal is the second largest port in Canada and a diversified transshipment centre that handles all types of goods: containerized and non-containerized cargo, liquid bulk and dry bulk. It is a leading container port served by the largest container shipping lines in the world. The Port of Montreal has its own rail network directly dockside. It is connected to the two national rail networks and a highway system. The Port operates a passenger terminal. All other terminals are run by private stevedoring firms.
