Ferry 'Coho' honored as historical society's 'ship of year'

Fri Aug 02 09:38:29 CEST 2013 arnekiel

The MV Coho ferry will join the ranks of the world's first nuclear-powered passenger ship and one of the country's last operating steam-powered car ferries when it is honored today by a nationwide powered-ship historical society. The Steamship Historical Society of America has chosen the Coho as the society's 2013 ship of the year, an honor that society board members have chosen once a year for the past 20 years, said retired Navy Cmdr. John Hamma, president of the society. More at http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/article/20130802/NEWS/308029968/coho-ferry-honored-as-historical-societys-ship-of-year

Coho ferry damaged by offloading truck delayed more than three hours

Mon Jul 29 09:22:15 CEST 2013 arnekiel

The 3 p.m. sailing of the MV Coho from Victoria was delayed by more than three hours after a truck struck the door of the ship causing it not to close. A semi truck is said to have struck a beam while leaving the ship after it arrived from Port Angeles and caused the door to not shut. Foot passengers walked around the ship pointing and taking photos as repair crews closed down the loading ramp to deal with the problem. Traffic was backed up along Belleville Street from the entrance of the ferry terminal to Menzies Street as customers weren’t able to enter in to the terminal until more passengers were loaded on. “We have to get home to Minneapolis tomorrow, I guess we might have to stay the night in Victoria if we don’t make our ferry,” said Marty Harding, who was vacationing in Victoria and planned on taking the 7:30 p.m. ferry to Port Angeles. The door was fixed at about 6:25 p.m., with vehicle passengers cheering as they were finally allowed to board the ship. The ship finally left Victoria just before 7 p.m.

Damaged dock won't be replaced in near future

Tue Jul 16 10:36:04 CEST 2013 Timsen

The private dock destroyed by the "Coho" in Victoria's Inner Harbour on July 11 likely won't be replaced before the end of the summer, as insurance companies still investigated the details of the collision. The "Coho" had backed into the dock used by Hyack Air which was purchased by the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority in June to create more marina space in the Inner Harbour. The damaged dock was not expected to significantly impact upcoming events like the Victoria Symphony Splash (Aug. 4) and Dragon Boat Festival (Aug. 16-18). Transport Canada was conducting an investigation into the collision. Operator Black Ball Ferry Line has already taken full responsibility for the incident.
