Drill machine for new miami port tunnel arrives

Fri Jun 24 09:41:37 CEST 2011 arnekiel

The $45-million German-built massive machine that will drill a tunnel to the Port of Miami arrived Thursday evening aboard Combi Dock I, so big it came packed in separate pieces inside large boxes and crates. Arrival of the machine marked the most important milestone in the $1 billion project since the Florida Department of Transportation and the private tunnel builder, Miami Access Tunnel, struck a final agreement in late 2009. “This is a monumental day for the people of Miami-Dade County,” said Ric Katz, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), who watched the arrival of the container ship Combi Dock 1 from South Pointe Park in South Beach. “This is the arrival of the tunnel boring machine that will, when assembled, build this important tunnel that will connect Watson Island with Dodge Island, our seaport, this county’s second most important economic generator.” Report with video http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/06/23/2281986/machine-to-drill-port-of-miami.html?asset_id=Tunnel%20boring%20machine%20arrives&asset_type=html_module
