Cosette towed to sea and scuttled

In the early morning of Nov 4, 2014, the direction of the Port of Martinique alerted the Prefecture due to a significant deterioration in the state of the abandoned "Cosette" and increased water ingress. At 5 a.m. the prefect decided to remove the ship from Fort de France in Martinique immediately in accordance with Article L218-45 of the Code of the environment and international obligations due to the imminent danger of sinking. The ship was cordoned off by guard ships when it was towed out of port at 7:00 a.m. toward the middle of the Bay of Fort-de-France to be scuttled west of Martinique on a depth of nearly 3000 meters. Abandoned roro ship may be scuttled

It took nearly 50 tons of concrete to seal the hold of the "Cosette" in the afternoon of Oct 24, 2014. The ship, abandoned since four years by the owner in the port of Fort de France, was in poor condition and threatened to sink at the dock. Works to pump out bilge water ande d plug the holes had started on Oct 21. The port of Fort de France has already paid nearly 100,000 Euros for the removal of hydrocarbon and other materials. As it seems difficult to get the run down ship to a European or American port to dismantle it, a possible solution may be to scuttle the ship 15 nautical miles from Martinique at a water depth of 1000 meters. Prison for ship surveyor who lied to Coast Guard

A Miami-based ship surveyor was sentenced today for lying to the Coast Guard and for falsely certifying that inspections had been performed on two ships, which were designed to ensure that the ships were seaworthy and did not pose a threat to the crew or the marine environment. Gonzalez was convicted of falsifying documents for the M/V Cosette, a 92-meter cargo vessel. As the surveyor on behalf of Bolivia, Gonzalez certified the ship as safe for sea while the vessel was docked in Fort Pierce, Fla., in November 2009. When the vessel shortly thereafter arrived in New York City harbor, Coast Guard inspectors discovered exhaust and fuel pouring into the engine room, endangering the crew and the ship. For his action, Gonzalez was convicted of making a false statement and obstructing a Coast Guard Port State Control examination.
