The Greenpeace activists, who was arrested after the 'Crimson Ace' was blocked in IJmuiden, have been released. Greenpeace blockage ended by police

Thu May 12 09:43:37 CEST 2022 Timsen

On May 11 the police has ended the blockade of the 'Crimson Ace' in the Northern lock in IJmuiden. Greenpeace climbers who were hanging from the lock were removed. The mayor of Velsen, Frank Dales, had previously asked Greenpeace to stop the action which was refused. The campaigners wanted the European Union to tighten up the so-called Forests Act in order to better protect forests and other ecosystems. The new IJmuiden Sea Lock was opened to prevent traffic jams in front of the lock. Other ships could still enter the harbour via that route. The opening the IJmuiden sea lock also caused environmental problems, as much more salt water flows into the North Sea Canal than usual and can cause salinization. The bulk carrier left the lock after 20 hours at 9.20 p.m. and finally berthed in the Mercurius Port of Amsterdam at 11.40 p.m.

Greenpeace blocks bulk carrier in IJmiuden

Wed May 11 10:21:14 CEST 2022 Timsen

More than 60 Greenpeace activists have been blocking the 'Crimson Ace' on its way to the port of Amsterdam on May 10, 2022, since midnight in IJmuiden. The bulk carrier is loaded with 60,000 tons of soybeans from Paranagua. The Greenpeace activists blocked the lock gates that the ship has to pass through on the way to port. They put up a banner about 40 meters long that read 'EU: Stop nature destruction now'. In addition to nature conservationists in boats, representatives of indigenous communities on board the Greenpeace ship 'Beluga II' were also taking part in the protest, The aim of the blockade is to draw attention to the destruction of the forest and nature. Greenpeace calls for a "strong EU law for global forest protection, which should prevent products from forest and nature destruction on the EU market".
