Reefer caused oil spill in Kalundborg Fjord

Wed Mar 21 10:02:49 CET 2018 Timsen

On March 20, 2018, the "Crown Ruby" suffered a crack in the hull and leaked oil from an oil tank after she hit an underwater obstruction. She headed into the Kalundborg Fjord, where the Navy Rescue Force in Kalundborg, which was alerted at 2.45 p.m. deployed the "MHV 912 - Holger Danske" which left port with a crew of 10 volunteers at 4.10 p.m. They reached the reefer 25 minutes later. Divers found a crack in the hull, and the crew of the boat laid out 360 meters of oil booms at both sides. It circled around the ship's aft and the hole in the hull so that the oil leakage was brought under control. Before, the ship had caused a spill of heavy fuel with a length of two kilometers and 20 meters wide.. It was on its way from St. Peterburg to Cristóbal, Panama, when the leak was discovered and the ship subsequently moored at Røsnæs in the Kalundborg Fjord. The captain of the "Holger Danske", Lieutenant Flemming Buch, sent an inflatable boat which sampled the oil. The anti pollution vessel "Gunnar Seidenfaden" arrived in the evening to take over the task. The "Holger Danske" and its crew were back in Kalundborg at 11 p.m. A surveillance aircraft was tasked to monitor the oil spill, and a drone ensured that it did not reach the coast. The bulkcarrier berthed at the Lindoe Shipyard OSS in Vigeroe for repairs on March 22 at 11 p.m. She sailed again on March 23 at 7.30 p.m., next bound to San Pedro, ETA Apr 8.
