Protests ended after Greenpeace activists were doused with water cannons
Environmental activists from Greenpeace announced on Aug 28 that they have ended their ongoing protest against Russia’s oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean. The series of actions began on Aug 25, when six activists, led by executive director of Greenpeace International Kumi Naidoo, scaled the side of the oil rig "Prirazlomnaya" in the Pechora Sea and remained suspended there for 15 hours, holding a banner reading “Save the Arctic.” On Aug 27 Naidoo and 13 other activists approached the "Anna Akhmatova", which ferries oil workers to the Prirazlomnaya rig, in inflatable boats and chained themselves to the vessel’s anchor. They were forced to end the protest when sailors aboard the ship doused them with high-pressure water cannons. Greenpeace criticizes what it claims is Gazprom's lack of a spill response plan for its Arctic operations. Gazprom has said to start drilling this summer and begin oil production by early 2013.
Greenpeace blocked supply ship of oil rig
Greenpeace activists who stormed Gazprom's oil rig "Prirazlomnaya" on Aug 24, 2012, have again taken action against the rig. Early in the morning of Aug 27, inflatables launched from the Greenpeace vessel "Arctic Sunrise" approached the "Anna Akhmatova", a supply vessel that carries workers to and from the rig, and attached themselves to the vessel's anchor chain. By 9 a.m. 14 activists from 10 different countries were in boats attached to the "Anna Akhmatova", preventing it from raising anchor and moving to the rig to complete work necessary for it to start drilling work. The group said a tense standoff was underway. The Russian Coastguard was reported to be on the scene but has not yet intervened. River passenger vessel Anna Akhmatova was on fire on Jan 29, staying in winter lay-up in Iksha basin, Moscow region, with two support crew on board. 5 fire teams took part in firefighting, fire was extinguished by 2300 Moscow time Jan 29. Fire covered about 400 sq meters of main deck and passenger areas. River vessel Anna Akhmatova has nothing to do with the ocean-going passenger vessel Anna Akhmatova, IMO 8509167.
