Pushed barge allided with wharf
The barge 'Ashtabula' (IMO: 8637495), being pushed by the 'Defiance', allided with the wharf upon the departure from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, in pos. 46 31 10.1 N, 084 22 40.7 W, Ontario, Canada,on Aug 18, 2023, at 02.05a.m. EDT, Aug 18. The barge was secured back to the wharf for repairs. No pollution was reported due to the incident.
Propulsion clutch failure
The 'Defiance' suffered a failure of its starboard propulsion clutch while pushing the barge 'Ashtabula' on Sep 16, 2020. The vessel and barge docked in Port Lambton, Ontario, and the crew carried out repairs. Both the vessel and barge resumed the voyage from Buffalo to Calcite, ETA Sep 18.
Barge and tug refloated
On Sep 22, 2018, at 4:31 a.m. currents freed the "Defiance" and "Ashtabula" from the clay bottom in Round Island Passage in the Straits of Mackinac. The Coast Guard had conducted an overflight with a pollution responder on in the evening and did not identify any signs of pollution. Another overflight was planned for the morning of Sep 23. After the grounding the U.S. Coast Guard had established a safety zone around it in the Straits of Mackinac, between Mackinac Island and Round Island. The vessels departed Cedarville, Michigan and was transiting to its next port of call in Buffington, Indianam when it ran aground. The cause of the grounding was under investigation of the Coast Guard Sault Ste. Marie. No injuries, pollution or flooding have been reported.
