Deneb wreck in Campamento en San Roque

Sun Jul 31 12:07:01 CEST 2011 Timsen

On July 19 the "Deneb" was towed to Campamento en San Roque by two harbor tugs. Here the wreck is to be prepared to tow it to a yet unnamed port either for repair or srap. Small fuel spill contained

Tue Jun 21 10:46:27 CEST 2011 Timsen

Salvage experts by June 21 have extracted 70 tons fuel oil from the capsized "Deneb" in the Port of Algeciras, with a further 74 tonnes still on board. The operation, which started on June 18, has caused a small spill, but the oil was contained within the floating booms that surround the vessel. Three skimmers sucked up 800 litres of oily water and there were no reports of pollution. The salvage contract was awarded to the Danish specialist Svitzer but part of the work – including the removal of the containers – was carried out by the local company Steelmac. Removing the remainder of the fuel will involve the removal of 34 containers from inside one of the ship’s cargo holds. In parallel, work is underway to seal another of the vessel’s holds in order to empty it of water. The salvage operation is likely to take some time and is already causing operational problems for the port. Maersk has been forced to divert some of its ships to another terminal in the port because the berth remains blocked.
