Port authority failed to refloat tanker wreck
The Aden Ports Corporation was facing difficulty in refloating the “Dia 1”, which sank off the port of Aden in southern Yemen last week, due to bad weather and strong winds. The port administration will continue its efforts to refloat the ship and remove it from its position despite the bad weather conditions and the ports modest capabilities. On July 26, the government announced an environmental pollution that spread to a nature reserve as a result of the sinking of the ship in the dumping area in the port of Aden. Before the sinking, the port authorities had tried to use a tug to secure the vessel, but specialised companies would have been needed for the job.The vessel had been moored since 2014 at Al-Bariqah, west of the main port, and had held stores of diesel. It was not clear how much fuel was stored in the ship when it sank. Leaking fuel had now spread along the coast for 12 miles.
Sinking of abandoned tanker causes severe oil spill
The 'Dia 1', which was abandoned and unmanned since seven years, started to list to port side and sank off the Al-Bariqa region west of the Aden Governorate, Yemen, on July 18, 2021. The derelict tanker is owned by the Overseas Company, which is affiliated with a Yemeni businessman. The sinking has led to cargo leakage and contamination of large parts of the governorate's coast and caused major pollution on the beaches of the Brega area. The spills spread to the Al-Haswa area, a few kilometres to the east. The pollution reached as far as the Al-Husva Nature Reserve. Yemen's Transport Minister, Abdul Salam Hamid, has instructed two official memorandums to the Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation and the General Authority for Maritime Affairs to jointly visit the shipwreck, assess the damage, take the necessary measures to avoid hindering the movement of ships to the docks.
