French frigate shot down Houthi drone

Thu Mar 21 10:35:08 CET 2024 Timsen

A drone of the Houthis was intercepted in the Red Sea by the helicopter on board a French frigate, the 'Languedoc' or 'Alsace', which was targeting a merchant ship on March 20, 2024. Both ships were deployed to the Middle East as part of the EU mission Aspides, launched on Feb 19 to protect ships threatened by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The French Army did not specify which frigate had intercepted the drone nor indicated the exact location of the incident. The French navy has already intercepted drones probably fired by the Houthis on several occasions. Fregate shot down one more drone

Wed Dec 13 12:07:45 CET 2023 Timsen

During a missile attack on the Norwegian tanker 'Strinda' (IMO: 9330771) on Dec 11 in the Bam-el-Mandem Strait, the FREMM 'Languedoc' was patrolling the area and intercepted and destroyed a drone that posed a direct threat to the 'Strinda'. Afterwards, the frigate placed itself in protection of the Strinda and thwarted an attempt to hijack the ship. The fire on board the 'Strinda' was brought under control and no injuries were reported. The USS 'Mason' then escorted the 'Strinda' towards the Gulf of Aden out of the threat zone. The drone strike conducted by the FREMM Languedoc marks another success for the frigate, which only began freedom of navigation patrols in the region on Dec 8. Just over the weekend, the vessel had already shot down two drones approximately 110 kilometers from the Yemeni coast, near Al Hudaydah.

Frigate shot down drones from Yemen

Mon Dec 11 12:11:48 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Languedoc' shot down two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that were launched against it while it was on patrol in the Red Sea off Yemen on Dec 9, 2023 at 9.30 p.m. LT, while the guided-missile frigate was underway some 110 kilometres off the coast of Hodeida. The frigate shot down both drones, which were identified as hostile and were fired from somewhere within Yemen. The incident is the latest in a series of successful UAV interceptions by NATO warships to protect commercial shipping passing through the Red Sea. Earlier this month, the US Navy guided-missile destroyers USS 'Carney' and USS 'Mason' shot down a total of four drones, all of which were fired from areas in Yemen under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi militia.
