120 migrants rescued in several missions
On the night of Dec 11, numerous departures of migrant boats in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, were reported to the CROSS Gris-Nez, which deployed the VCSM 'Oyapock' to monitor a migrant boat off Petit-Fort-Philippe. Following an engine failure, the people on board the boat requested assistance. The 'Oyapock' picked up 52 people and dropped them off at the port of Dunkirk, where theys were taken care of by the land rescue services. At the same time, another departure of migrants was reported to the CROSS off Audresselles. The 'Abeille Normandie' was deployed for surveillance. After a few hours, the tug crew noticed that the boat had stopped off Wissantorder to embark people waiting on the beach for an attempt to cross the strait. The tug launched its semi-rigid boats in order to anticipate any danger caused by this embarkation from the coast. The 'Abeille Normandie' recovered two people who were in the water and continued to monitor the rest of the people on board the boat, which refused any assistance. The two people taken care of by the 'Abeille Normandie' were then transferred to the 'Minck', which had been deployed in parallel by the CROSS Gris-Nez for another rescue operation in the Grand-Fort-Philippe sector: Following an engine failure of their boat, the migrants on board requested assistance from the rescue ship 'Minck', which recovered 64 people, who, as well as the two people previously transferred aboard from the 'Abeille Normandie', were brought back to the port of Calais and taken care of by the land rescue services. The 'Borda' also rescued two people and brought them back to the quay in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
190 migrants rescued from four boats
In the night of Dec 1 and on Dec 2, the CROSS Gris-Nez was informed that several migrant boats were in difficulty in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais. The 'Abeille Normandie' was engaged in two operations. First it assisted a migrant boat with 65 people on board. From a second boat. the crew rescued 28 people. The rest of the people on the boat refused the assistance offered by the emergency tug. Given the risks incurred by migrants in the event of restrictive actions to force them to board the State rescue resources such as falling overboard, thermal shock, various trauma, it was decided to let them continue their voyage. All the rescued people were dropped off at the quay of Boulogne sur Mer. The 'Borda' was engaged in the morning of Dec 2 off Steps to assist a migrant boat. The 'Apollo Moon' assisted another migrant boat and rescued 31 people. The castaways were dropped at Boulogne sur Mer, where they were taken care of by the shore based rescue services and the border police. In total, 190 people were rescued by French means during the operations.
46 migrants rescued from two boats
In the night of Dec 1 the CROSS Gris-Nez was informed that two migrant boats were in difficulty off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer and deployed the offshore tug 'Argonaute' to the first boat. The crew recovered 24 people, who were dropped off in the morning at the port of Boulogne sur Mer, where they are taken care of by the land rescue services and the Border Police. At the same time, the CROSS Gris-Nez deployed the 'Borda' to assist a second boat in difficulty. The crew recovered 22 people with slight hypothermia who were cared for by the on-board medical team. The rest of the people on the boat refused the assistance offered.
