Ferry captain helped to save life of sea kayaker

On June 6, 2021, the attentive captain of the 'Frisia VI' along with the crew of a motor boat and the lifeboat 'Eugen' of the DGzRS station Norderney saved the life of a man who had capsized with his sea kayak in the dangerous sea channel between Juist and Norderney. He had set off with four other sea kayakers in the morning in the east port of Norden-Norddeich. Around 1 p.m he capsized in the Dove Deep at buoy D11. In the strong currents the man did not manage to get back into his boat despite the greatest effort, even with the help of the other paddlers. The captain of the passing "Frisia 6" observed the scene. He immediately recognized the life-threatening situation in which the man found himself. He immediately alerted the DGzRS station Norderney, and a few minutes later the 'Eugen' was on scene. In the meantime, the strong ebb current of 4,5 knots had taken the sea kayaker about 400 meters northwards. The crew of a motor boat kept him afloat with a sling. Because the sea was rough and the current was strong, the rescuers only managed to get the very exhausted and severely hypothermic man out of the water with great difficulty. At the height of the west beach between the buoys 20 and 22, they pulled him on board with the rescue net. He himself could no longer actively participate in his rescue. He was wrapped in warm blankets and brought him ashore as quickly as possible. In the port of Norderney an ambulance was ready for further care.

Engine failure off Norderney

On Aug 10, 2018, around 11 a.m. the "Frisia VI“ with 60 passengers on board suffered a failure of both main engines off the west beach of Norderney during the crossing to Norddeich. The ship managed to hold its position with the bow thruster which remained operating. The lifeboat "Eugen" of the DGzRS station Norderney was called to assist and took the ferry in tow back to the port. On Oct 16, 2010, around 8 p.m. the "Frisia 6" ran aground on its way from Norddeich to the island Juist with 250 passengers aboard seven kilometres off the port of Juist. Nine passengers were taken off by a rescue boat, the others remained on board and were supplied with food and blankets. The ship refloated with the rising tide in the morning of Oct 17 at 5 a.m. and proceeded to its destination. The strong eastern wind had caused the grounding of the vessel which had departed from from Norddeich at 6.40 p.m. on scheduled for the 90-minutes-passage.
