Two more tankers targeted by US sanctions
The 'Izumo' and 'Frunze' were the next targets of sanctions from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Oct 2, 2024, besides four entities, and one Iranian operative. The 'Izuomo' has been specifically implicated in the smuggling of Iranian oil, the proceeds from which are then in turn used to finance attacks in the Red Sea. The tanker has been linked to the transport of oil for the company Sepehr Energy Jahan Nama Pars, which has been identified as a front for the Iranian military. This led both the 'Izumo' and its owner, theGemini Maritime Ltd., to be sanctioned. The 'Frunze' has been identified as an asset in which the Gemini Maritime has an interest and hence has also been targeted in the sanctions. The US government claimed that three of the sanctioned companies, the Shenzhen Boyu Imports and Exports Co. Ltd., the Shenzhen Jinghon Electronics Ltd. and the Shenzhen Rion Technology Co. Ltd., were found to be supplying components for the construction of missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and other military equipment to the Houthis. The Iranian operative Hasan Ahmad Hasan Muhammad al-Kuhlani has been sanctioned for coordinating the smuggling efforts.
