Two injured in collision on upper Merwede
The "Gorinchem X" was in collision with the cement tanker "Tarsis" 1467 ts (EU-No.: 06004050), on the upper Merwede at Werkendam on Sep 26, 2017, at 7.30 a.m. The master of the ferry, sailing between Gorinchem and Sleeuwijk, initially had felt uncomfortable, after which he lost control of the ship and slammed into the other ship. There were no passengers on board. The KNRM boat "Tjepke Ekkelboom" was underway at high speed 15 minutes after the accident. Two crew members were dropped off aboard the ferry. Both crew members of the "Gornichem X" were injured. Jointly with Gorinchem'S fire department, the Seaport police and the crew of the patrol boat "RWS 73" they were taken off and brought ashore at the Damen Shipyard where they were treated by ambulance staff. After both were cared for, the lifeboat headed to the tanker but found that everyone aboard was fine, and the boat could return to the station. The bow of the "Gorinchem X" was crushed. The cement tanker suffered less damage and berthed at Hansweert at 7.45 p.m. Dense fog may have contributed to the collision. Skipper of ferry caused collision
The skipper of the "Gorinchem X" which was in collision two weeks ago on the Merwede in Werkendam, was found guilty of the collision. He should have given way to the barge, but did not by yet unclear reasons. The investigation into the collision is nearly complete. The "Gorinchem X" is currently being repaired at the yard of Damen Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. Once the repair is completed, the ferry will return into service which will take, however, several days. Repair will take several weeks
The barge with a length of more than twenty meters which hit the "Gorinchem X" by yet unknown causes during the last crossing Hardinxveld-Giessendam to Werkendam on Nov 17, did not flee from the scene but in fact stopped at the first opportunity in Gorinchem for investigations by the police Both skippers have been heard. The severely damaged ferry was released in the morning of Nov 18 and will be repaired at Damen Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. The repair will take several weeks. While there was relatively little damage at the hull, the interior was quite battered. The ferry service was running on an emergency timetable and additional sailings between Gorinchem and Sleeuwijk were planned.
