Container ship assisted in rescue of 70 migrants

On Nov 21, 2021, at noon, a semi-submerged sailing boat was located ​​30 nautical miles southwest of the port of Paleochora, Chania. Under the coordination of the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center, patrol boats and aircraft were mobilized to the scene. A total of 70 people were rescued, among them 61 men, four women and five minors. One body of a man was recivered. The castaways were transported towards Paleochora with the assistance of the 'Harrison', which had been nearby enroute from Ashdod to Koper, and transferred to a lifeboat which took them to port. First aid was provided jointlywith the Red Cross of Chania-Kissamos. Two men and one woman were transported by ambulance to the General Hospital in Chania for further medical examination. The body was transported to the Chania Mortuary. The rest of the migrants were transported by bus to a safe place of accommodation of the Municipality of Kantanos Selinos. A preliminary investigation was carried out by the Central Port Authority of Chania.
