Casualty escorted Rhine upstream

Mon Feb 13 18:17:44 CET 2012 Timsen

The "Veerhaven II" which had been in danger of sinking after breaching itself a leak enroute Amsterdam-Schwegern, was heading Rhine upstream in the later afternoon of Jan 12 escorted by two police boats and three boats of the fire brigage. After the convoy had reached Ruhrort, where the damage was to be repaired at the New Ruhrorter Yard, the "Veerhaven II" suffered another leak while being pulled onto a slip, causing another oil spill. The fire rescue Duisburg was working the whole night of Feb 13 to surround the spill with booms. A bunker ship was called to pump off the remaining fuel on board the "Veerhaven II". Veerhafen II in danger of sinking

Sun Feb 12 21:27:03 CET 2012 Timsen

The "Veerhafen II" was in danger of sinking on the Rhine at Duisburg-Walsum, river km 791, in the morning of Jan 12, 2012, short past 9 a.m. after it had suffered a gash of 50 centimetres length while lifting its anchor opposite he south port of Walsum. Boats of the fire rescues from Wesel, Duesseldoef and Duisburg were able to keep the ship from foundering with pumps capable of removing 17 tons water per minute. The "Veerhafen II" had been underway with four empty barges. Obviously the chains of the anchors had got entangled so that one of the anchors tore a leak into the hull. durchschlug. Due to the strong current no divers could be sent down to patch the leak. In the run of the afternoon the "Veerhaven II“ was towed into the harbour basin of Walsum. Some amounts of oil were spilt.
