Unwell Skipper and his boat saved by HMS Mersey

HMS "Mersey" on June 7, 2011, rushed to the aid of a fishing vessel after its skipper became ill. The "Mersey was on routine fishery protection patrols about 20 miles south-west of Rye, East Sussex, when she heard a distress call to Dover coastguard at 10.20 a.m. The ship’s offer of help was accepted by the coastguard and her seaboat was launched immediately to assist the 10-metre vessel "Christy Ann", which was 12 miles away. First-aiders stabilised the unwell skipper, and 10 minutes later the coastguard rescue helicopter based at Lee-on-the-Solent arrived and winched the man to Eastbourne Hospital. A Mersey’s lieutenant then steered the vessel to Rye Harbour.

Liverpool Echo reports, that HMS Mersey yesterday sped into action to catch and fine a irish trawler for overfishing. The Royal Navy warship, affiliated to Sefton, was out on patrol when she spotted an Irish-owned Spanish-operated stern trawler vessel 200 miles off Land’s End in the Atlantic. A fisherman who had mis-recorded a catch of hake in the area, policed by the Navy, was given a £2,000 on-the-spot fine and reported to the Marine Management Organisation for further investigation.
