Drunk master feared to run ship aground

The Vestfold police arrested the captain and first officer of the "Hako" in the afternoon of Dec 14, 2012. The police suspected him drink-driving after the ship had beenn heading straight towards the shore short time after it had left the dock in Holmes at 11 a.m. During routine correspondence with the traffic center the traffic manager suspected that something was wrong. The traffic control at Horten alerted the master of a Coast Guard ships nearby. After listening to the correspondence together, the two agreed that something was wrong. Meanwhile, the "Hako" with its cargo of grain was heading to land and would have run aground if it had remained on course for another six minutes. The master was contacted again and stated he had problems with the autopilot. After several calls and further correspondence the vessel slowed down and change course away from shore. After a somewhat unusual route shaped like an eight the ship returned to Holmes, followed by the Coast Guard. The police was already waiting and questioned the Norwegian master and the mate 51 from Poland. Blood samples were taken, but there were already clear indications that both men were intoxicated. They were taken in custody of the Vestfold police thereupon. The ship was originally headed for Bergen.

On July 17, 2010, the "Hako" was in collision with a cabin cruiser off Hvaler. The bow of the cruiser was crushed. The rescue boat "Horn Flyer" came to assist. The skipper was injured. The cruiser was towed to port. The skipper is thought to have run into the course of the "Hako" which went at anchor at the scene of the collision for investigations. It berthed at the Fugleskjars Quay on July 21.
