Bow thruster installation cause of sinking of Sun Odyssey

Fri Apr 21 11:48:29 CEST 2023 Timsen

After the sinking of the 'Inis' on March 24 off Schönberg, the French manufacturer of the yacht is now launching a recall campaign. The installation of the bow thruster was found to be the problem- Shortly after the sinking of the Sun Odyssey, Jochen-P. Kunze, attorney forthe "Santiano" violinist Pete Sage, already had the suspicion that the retractable bow thruster was the cause of the sinking. Contrary to the installation instructions from the supplier Sleipner, only sealing compound can be seen on the installation flanges of the radiator box, while the prescribed angle laminates were missing on the boat. Meanwhile, a Jeanneau team inspected the lifted yacht and confirmed the retractable bow thruster area as the source of the leak. Jeanneau called on all owners of the Sun Odyssey 410, 440 and 490, which are equipped with the extendable bow thruster and are built between 2020 and 2022, to take strengthening measures in the thruster area, working on an information system for the owners concerned. A dedicated section on the website provides owners with detailed guidance on how to carry out this reinforcement. The information can be found at www.jeanneau.com "Jeanneau was informed of an incident on March 24, 2023 in which a 2021-built Sun Odyssey 410 sank off the coast of Schönberg, Germany. Fortunately, the owner and his wife on board were rescued thanks to the quick intervention of the DGzRS. Jeanneau teams want to thoroughly investigate the recovered boat as soon as possible to determine the exact causes of this isolated incident. We will keep our dealers and customers informed of the outcome of this investigation. At this time there is no connection between this incident and the recall initiated on March 1, 2023 to reinforce the bonding of retractable bow thruster modules in the hulls of the Sun Odyssey 410, 440 and 490 equipped with this option and in 2021 and 2022 were produced. As the safety of our boats is an absolute priority, as a precautionary measure we wanted to reinforce the bow thruster flange on these hulls to prevent leaks from occurring without the risk of water ingestion. For the past month, the list of affected hulls has been sent to dealers so they can contact their customers to organize this work. The relevant information measures with the owners will continue in the coming weeks." Yacht of Santiano violinist Pete Sage dropped off in Laboe days after sinking

Fri Mar 31 09:17:54 CEST 2023 Timsen

Tne 'Inis' of the Santiano violinist Pete Sage sank in the afternoon of March 24, 2023, in the Kiel bight off Schönberg. The alerted emergency services were able to save two people from a small dinghy. The sailing yacht could not be saved, the first sailing tour of the year from Neustadt to Kiel ended on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Shortly after the alarm was raised at around 4:30 p.m., an SAR operation started with the "Berlin" bein deployed from Laboe, the pilot boat “Stein”, the customs boat “Schleswig-Holstein” and the police boat “Duburg”. The lifeboat cew then found a small dinghy of the sailing yacht with two people floating in the water. Both people were rescued and brought to Laboe aboard the 'Berlin'. How the accident could have happened in the relatively good weather was still unclear. A collision with an unknown object was not rules out. On March 29 the salvage ship 'Elisabeth Hoej' (IMO: 6922391) raised the wreck of the yacht off the Schönberg Beach. Divers patched a leak in the foreship with a leak sail, before the boat was towed to Laboe in the evening and lifted out of the water. The police boat 'Falshöft' secured the salvage operation. An investigation into the cause of the sinking was launched.
