Yacht sank despite fire fighting efforts by tug

On Sep 7, 2022, the 'Ioannis' was deployed to assist after the 29 metre classic yacht 'Halcyon' caught fire at the P pontoon of Gouvia Marina in Marina Gouvia, in Corfu at around 4 p.m. LT. The flames had spread from a 20 metre sailing yacht to several other yachts in the vicinity. The 'Halycon' was then towed out of the marina but the damage to the hull and weight of the water required to extinguish the flames caused her to sink. Other yachts involved in the fire included a sailing catamaran and a speedboat. Firefighters have been working to extinguish the flames, with five fire engines and boats. Authorities are also trying to implement floating protection nets to minimise pollution. No injuries have been reported.
