Fire in Kingston caused heavy damage to ferry

The 'Jaden Sun' caught fire while berthed at the Kingstown/Grenadines wharf on the Upper Bay Street,Cane Garden in Kingstown harbour on tAug 7, 2025 at 7.45 a.m.. Heavy smoke and large flames were visible at the uppper deck at the aft of the vessel. The fire department of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) responded to the fire, and, with help from several members of the public and a tug with fire fighting capacities,which came alongside, the fire could be knocked down. However, it caused serious damage to the passenger area, and the ship was no longer operable. The engine room remained unaffected. The cause of the fire was unknown as this time. The ferry with a capacity of 218 passenger offers passenger service between mainland St. Vincent and the Grenadine Islands of Bequia, Canouan and Union Island. Ferry has to replace engine

Transportation to the Southern Grenadines by ferry has been reduced as the 'Jaden Sun' and 'Gem Star 2' both notified the public of interruptions to their service. The 'Jaden Sun' had been chartered by government to move residents, disaster response personnel and relief supplies in and out of Union Island, Mayreau and Canouan following the passage of Hurricane Beryl which lashed the islands on July 1. On July 11, 2024, the service had to be halted temporarily due to technical difficulties. On July 12 it was announced that the technical difficulties were worse than anticipated. As a result, the ship had to be taken out of operation for approximately 6 to 8 weeks to replace an engine.
